Thomasene Kanipe Hogan, 85, passed away on June 10, 2022. Tommie, as her family and friends knew her, was born in Charlotte, NC, on October 13, 1936, to the late Georgia Lee Maner and Thomas Gadis Kanipe. A lifelong Charlottean, Tommie didn’t leave her beloved hometown except for some great summers spent in Myrtle Beach, SC, where she was awarded the title of Miss Myrtle Beach in 1956. Tommie’s primary occupation was as a homemaker and caregiver.
Before finding her niche in caring for others, she was in the Secretarial and Administration field. Tommie was a member of the Stonewall Jackson Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 1160, where she and her late husband, Pete Hogan, had many happy times dancing and laughing with friends.
Tommie had many interests, but her passion was for entertaining friends and family. She loved music and dancing. Tommie’s favorite dance was the shag, something she picked up from her time at the beach. She enjoyed canning homegrown vegetables and cooking for everyone (her specialty was lemon-pepper wings). She was an avid reader who enjoyed biographies most. Tommie kept her mind sharp doing crossword puzzles and, later on, developed a love of adult coloring books - speeding through them with an artistic zeal. Tommie spent much of her time relaxing on her front porch. As one who had never met a stranger, Tommie was always waving or striking up conversations with the neighbors or passers-by, heading down to the neighborhood park. Her neighbors have expressed how much they will miss seeing her outside every day.
Tommie truly loved her family, which was blended by blood and by love. There was no such thing as a step or a real; she loved all equally.
Tommie was predeceased by her son, William Alexander, husband, Pete Hogan, and daughter, Anja Cheek. She is survived by her brother, Guy (Joanne) Kanipe (OR), daughters, Connie (Daniel) Tew (NC), Christie (Bob) Atkinson (NC), Carla (Don) Shehane (FL); son-in-law, Brent Cheek (NC); grandchildren, Eric (Sarah) Tew (SC), William (Juliette) Tew (NC), Amy Bassett (FL), Marshall Cheek (NC), Olivia (Kurt) Floto, (NC); and great-grandchildren, Jerod (Meghan) Tew (TX), James & Shiloh Tew (SC), Brayden & Kaylee Bassett (FL), and Aiden Tew (NC).
A memorial service will be held at a later date for close friends and family to celebrate Tommie’s life.
