John Elton Meeks passed peacefully on August 22, 2024, after 62 years full of adventure. John was born in Lumberton, North Carolina, son of Francis and Alma. He had a large family and shared a close bond with his two sisters, Karen Brisson and Jan Anderson, and three brothers, David, Phillip and Andy Meeks. The six siblings frequently spent time together over holidays and vacations. They bonded over the love of food, animals, and sharing jokes together.
John shared a 30 year marriage with his wife Jennifer McMillan. They had two children, Laurel and Gabriel. After John and Jennifer amicably separated, John found a new sweetheart, Tonya Stanley, to share the last 5 years with. Tonya has become intricately linked with the family. John is survived by his daughter Laurel, son-in-law John Mobley, and grandson Beauregard.
John learned about strong work ethic from a young age growing up in North Carolina and Alabama. He used his strong work ethic and tenacious attitude to build a successful entrepreneurial career over his life. John ran two commercial floor covering businesses, then spent 20 years building an energy efficiency contracting company, AppleBossom Energy. He found his true passion in his last business, helping people save money while benefiting the environment by reducing energy usage in homes and buildings. On the side, John had a love for improving properties. He renovated the family beach condo, the family home, his commercial office building, and several other “flip” properties. He never saw a property that he thought could not be fixed. Besides his strong work ethic, John had the ability to fix anything. He knew how to use tools, tractors, even good bartering to make his dreams a realization.
His hobbies were extremely fun and numerous. He enjoyed flying his Cessna airplane, riding his Harley on country roads, and sailing boats on the open water. He was truly a sporting man. These hobbies were not to be surpassed by his love for music, especially island music like Kenny Chesney and Jimmy Buffett.
May John rest in peace and dance in heaven with his son Gabriel and his favorite dog Gucci.
