Jeanne Mitchell

Jeanne Mitchell, 91, passed away on August 10, 2019 in Charlotte, NC.

Jeanne Booth was born on May 2, 1928 in Canton (Cardiff), Wales, and life took her to Cumbria, Blackpool, and Lytham St. Annes in the United Kingdom, eventually moving to the United States in 1962, where she lived in Massachusetts, upstate New York, and Washington state. In early 2018 she and her husband Frank moved to Charlotte to be closer to family.

She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Frank Mitchell, sister Edwina, children Stephanie and Andrew, daughter-in-law Heather Richter and grandchildren Kyle and Katelyn.

Jeanne was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. She was educated at the Blackpool Collegiate School for Girls, where she excelled in art and languages. Throughout her life she shared her skills in oil painting, stitchery and other crafts, which were much appreciated, as were her intricate greeting cards, hand-made for family, friends, and loved ones at every occasion. She also enjoyed classical and jazz music, reading, word games, crossword puzzles and spelling bees.

She felt strongly that no community was complete without a library and worked tirelessly with a group of friends and neighbors to create one in the town where she lived from 1969 to 1999. Her diplomatic voice helped organize countless volunteers over many hours of devoted service. Earlier in life she had been an equally effective and enthusiastic volunteer in a church office and in transcribing books into Braille. In all these endeavors she drew on skills honed in her first career as an executive assistant to top management, notably at a confectionery firm in northern England.

The family will hold a memorial service on Wednesday August 28, 2019, with visitation beginning at 2pm, service at 3pm in the Chapel at the University City United Methodist Church, 3835 West WT Harris Blvd, Charlotte NC, with a reception to follow. Guests are encouraged to wear colors, as Jeanne was especially fond of purple. Flowers can be sent to the church prior to the visitation.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made to the New Hartford Public Library at www.newhartfordpubliclibrary.org/gift-form.
