Edsel (Ed) Richard Field, 92, of Davidson, NC passed away on May 9, 2024, after a long and well-fought battle with Alzheimer’s.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 68 years, Elsie; son David Field (Sherri); daughters Cathy Foster (Mark), Beth Field (David Pritchard) and Susan Field Waite (Duncan). He was a proud and loving grandpa to 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Born in McGregor, Minnesota,
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, William and Aili Field, and his brother, Marvin Field.
In his early years, Ed worked on the family farm in Minnesota. He and his brother Marvin helped their dad with his logging business, which included cutting and selling Christmas trees in the winter.
In October 1954, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and after finishing navigator training, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He later completed pilot training and received his wings in 1959. Over the course of his military career, Ed flew to every continent. He flew over 10,000 hours in 35 makes and models of aircraft, and also jumped out of some of those “perfectly good aircraft”. He was both honored and proud to serve his country. In July 1986, after 31 years, Ed retired from the USAF as a Brigadier General. Ed continued to work for another 20 years, for various aerospace and defense companies primarily in military training aircrew support.
Ed will be remembered as a man who valued hard work and perseverance. He was someone you could depend on to help out with any task. He dearly loved his wife Elsie who was faithfully always by his side. His big smile will never be forgotten.
The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at The Landings of Cabarrus for their compassionate loving care during the final year of Ed’s life. They would also like to acknowledge the Young at Heart Alzheimer’s Ministry at St Mark Catholic Church for their great support and encouragement over the years.
