Dorma Kay Smith

January 25, 1947 — December 22, 2023

Charlotte

Dorma Kay Smith, 76, passed away on December 22, 2023, in Matthews, NC. She was born on January 25, 1947, in Beckley, WV, to the late Fred Roy and Margaret Lee Heron.

Always known as Kay, she was a loving and devoted wife to her late husband, James Joseph "Jim" Smith. Taking care of her husband was one of her proudest accomplishments and a testament to their enduring love. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Barry Glenn Heron and feline friend, Felix.

Kay is survived by her loving son Scotty Smith and his wife Kimberly; her adoring grandchildren Shane Smith, Nathan Smith, Kaci Smith, Eliana Smith, Samara Smith; beloved cousin Beverly Bazzie; dear extended family Bruce and Sheila Wolven; as well as numerous friends and colleagues whose lives she touched with her genuine care and compassion.

Kay was a dedicated office administrator for Total Distribution just shy of 27 years. She had an unwavering work ethic, continuing to work until two months before her passing. Kay was not just an office administrator; she was also the unofficial office mom who touched the hearts of her colleagues with her kindness and thoughtfulness.

One of the most cherished memories of Kay was her commitment to taking care of her family. Whenever her son Scotty, daughter-in-law Kimberly, or grandchildren fell ill, she would drop off their favorite drinks and snacks to comfort them. Scotty found solace in his daily conversations with Kay during their rides home from work. He knew he could share anything with her and count on her unwavering support.

Kay developed a deep bond with her grandchildren as she enthusiastically supported each in their unique interests. Her presence in their life brought immeasurable joy and support. Kay always made time to attend her grandchildren's choir performances, sporting events, and other activities – proof of the deep love she harbored for them.

A woman of faith, Kay found solace in prayer and read the Bible avidly. She particularly favored the King James version. Her belief in Jesus Christ inspired her family to live by a simple question she often posed: "If Jesus were in the room, would you do it?" This mantra guided them in making decisions that aligned with their values.

Outside of her career and family, Kay had a deep love of music. Having sung with her parents while growing up, she inherited their musical talent. She was an active member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church Harris Campus and lent her voice to the church choir for many years. Kay's love for animals was evident in her interactions with many pets throughout her life. Most recently, her feline friend, Felix, brought her comfort and companionship after the loss of Jim in 2018.

Kay had a unique knack for gift-giving. She always found interesting and fun ways to present gifts to her family, creating precious memories that will be cherished forever.

Visitation will be held on December 28, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Harrisburg Funeral & Cremation located at 3840 NC Hwy 49 South in Harrisburg, NC. A funeral service will follow at the same location at 5:00 PM.
