Charlotte

Alberto Antonio Amessa, known to many as Tony Romano from his illustrious 45-year career as a professional wrestler, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2024, in Charlotte. He was born on March 6, 1927, in Argentina to Alberto Albino Amessa and Otilia Rosa Amessa.

Tony's life was filled with remarkable experiences and achievements. Beyond his wrestling persona, he embarked on a diverse career journey that led him to the Harris Teeter corporate office and eventually to a humble position as a bagger at the south Charlotte Harris Teeter store. His genuine love for interacting with people made this job truly special to him.

One of the most cherished memories of Tony's life was meeting his beloved wife, Consuelo, in Panama City. Their love story unfolded in the midst of their respective professional endeavors – Tony as a wrestler and Consuelo as a professional flamenco dancer.

Described as a calm, patient man with a heart of gold, Tony had a knack for bringing people together. He was known for his friendly demeanor, peacemaking nature, and unwavering dedication to his family. Family gatherings became all the more joyful because of his presence.

In his leisure time, Tony dedicated himself to staying active and healthy. With a rigorous workout routine of 2-3 hours daily, he enjoyed playing tennis, swimming, and taking long walks. An avid reader, he often sought solace in the aisles of Barnes and Noble before starting his day at work. Tony's creativity shone through in his talent for repurposing items that others deemed useless.

A Celebration of Life service in honor of Tony will be held on July 28, 2024, at Raymer-Kepner Chapel in Huntersville, NC. The event will be an opportunity for all who knew him to come together and commemorate the remarkable life he lived.

Tony leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth that will be carried on by his surviving family members: his wife of 68 years Consuelo Amessa; children Jose Amessa; Adrian Amessa (Vickie); Carmen Linkous (Mark); Lolita Faulkenberry (John); grandchildren Alice Almond (Bobby), Michelle Knick (Ryan), Jason Faulkenberry (Nicole), Vanessa Amessa, Christian Amessa (Nuria), Amanda Forrest (Bo); 8 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
