It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Abdul Hakim Muhammad, a devoted father, grandfather, and Vietnam veteran, who left this world November 8, 2024, at the age of 68. Born on October 24, 1955, Abdul lived a life characterized by service, strength, and steadfast dedication to his family and faith. He was an accomplished high school basketball player, demonstrating on his competitive spirit and athleticism.
A proud veteran, Abdul served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, embodying the courage and commitment that defined his character. After his military service, he continued his career in law enforcement and security, reflecting his lifelong passion for protecting others.
Abdul was a dedicated Muslim, known for his healthy lifestyle and holistic approach to well-being. He abstained from alcohol and tobacco, instead focusing on nurturing his body through natural remedies and nutritious meals. This commitment to health mirrored his devotion to family, as he sought to set a positive example for his children. His fun-loving personality brought joy to those around him, and while his tall stature may have seemed intimidating, Abdul’s gentle nature shone through in his interactions with family and friends. Despite facing health challenges later in life, he remained strong-willed and maintained his independence as much as possible.
He is survived by his beloved children, Jeremiah Johnson and Ayana (Johnson) Contreras, who will forever cherish the love and guidance of their father. As a proud grandfather, he delighted in the company of his two grandchildren, Anaya Jay Hedricks, age 12, and Victoria Contreras, age 9, who brought immense joy to his life.
Ayana reflects on her father with deep love: "Dad, I’m still in shock. I still can’t believe this is even real. I always thought even as a little girl that my daddy was invincible. You were my superhero. No one was stronger or tougher than my dad. I remember how much pride you took in your appearance—clean shirt, crispy ironed jeans, and pristine tennis shoes. Some of my favorite memories are of us going to the movies, always watching action-packed or karate films, and feeling like a princess in my custom-made gowns for mosque. My heart breaks knowing you didn’t get to fulfill all your dreams, but you were still deeply loved. I am relieved you finally get to rest, and I hope you watch over us now more than ever. I love you more than words can express. Daddy's little girl, -Yani."
Abdul shared a special bond with his son Jeremiah, who served as his caregiver for the last four years of Abdul's life. Though this role came with its challenges, Jeremiah cherished the opportunity to support and care for his father.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Abdul's memory to a veterans' organization of your choice. Abdul Hakim Muhammad will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
The family will honor Abdul with a memorial service and military honors at Salisbury National Cemetery on December 6, 2024 at 2PM.
